What does “Ohio” mean?
Ohio, in slang, means weird, cursed or off: “that’s so Ohio.” It has nothing to do with the state, which is the joke.
Where it comes from
From the “Only in Ohio” meme, which from about 2016 attached strange local news and surreal images to the state, then spread through TikTok in 2022 and 2023 until Ohio stood for anything bizarre. Google’s 2025 Year in Search listed it fifth among the slang people asked about.
Ohio in a sentence
- That gas station had a whole aisle of pickled eggs. Very Ohio.
- My dream last night was pure Ohio.
Can you say it at work?
Only with people who know the meme. To everyone else, and to anyone from Ohio, it sounds like an insult to a state.
