Terms of Use
These terms are between you and PixelPaw SRL, the company that makes Gloss (“we”). By using Gloss, you agree to them and to Apple’s standard license for apps, which covers the app itself. Our Privacy Policy says what we do with your data.
What Gloss does
Gloss explains words and passages you choose, in a style you pick, brings you a new word each day, and lets you practice the words you’ve met. It’s a reading aid, not a dictionary of record. A passage read back in plain words is a plain reading, not legal, medical or financial advice.
Explanations are written with AI
Gloss’s explanations are written by AI, Anthropic’s Claude: the words in Gloss’s own list ahead of time, and anything else when you ask. Code checks every one, but no person reads them, so some will be wrong. Check anything that matters somewhere else. If one seems off, tell us with Something off? The AI checks it again, and wrong ones are fixed in a later update.
Strong language
When you look up a vulgar word, a slur or a sexual term, Gloss explains it plainly and briefly, and marks a slur as offensive. It never brings you one you didn’t ask for.
Membership
Gloss needs a membership, sold through the App Store: Yearly, which starts with a free trial (its length is shown before you start), Monthly, or Lifetime, a one-time purchase. The price is shown before you buy. Apple takes the payment under its own terms, and we never see your card.
Lifetime opens Gloss for as long as we offer it, on any iPhone signed in to the same Apple Account.
Without a membership, or once one ends, you can still read your library, but no new glosses come.
Trials and renewals
A free trial becomes a paid yearly membership when it ends, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before. Each Apple Account gets one trial. Memberships renew until you cancel, in Settings, under your Apple Account, at least 24 hours before the renewal. Canceling stops the next renewal, and the time you’ve paid for stays yours.
Deleting your Gloss account doesn’t cancel your membership. It stays with your Apple Account until you cancel it there.
Refunds
Refunds are Apple’s to give, under Apple’s terms, including the right to withdraw from a purchase that EU law gives you. Ask Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Your account
Gloss is for people 16 and older. After you buy, Gloss asks you to sign in with Apple, so your glosses are backed up and follow you to a new phone. You can sign out, export your glosses or delete your account in Gloss, under You, then Account.
Fair use
To keep Gloss fast and affordable, an account can have up to 200 passages explained a day, pasted or shared, and up to 10 in any minute. Looking up words has no limit.
What you may not do
- Break the law with Gloss, or use it to harass or harm anyone.
- Paste or share text you have no right to, or other people’s private details you shouldn’t pass on.
- Get around the membership, the limits or the sign-in, or let other people use your account.
- Send requests by script or bot, or copy Gloss’s explanations or its word list in bulk.
- Take the app apart, except where the law allows it.
- Attack, overload or probe our servers.
If you do, we may limit or close your account. Where we can, we’ll tell you why first.
Your words
What you look up, save, paste and share stays yours. You let us send it to our AI provider and keep it as our Privacy Policy says, only to explain it and to run Gloss. We don’t sell it and don’t use it to advertise.
Our content
The explanations, the games, the word list and Pica belong to us. Dictionary lines come from Wiktionary, under the CC BY-SA license, and quotes from books in the public domain. Share a card with its attribution as much as you like. Don’t republish the explanations.
Changes
Gloss changes as we improve it. When these terms change, we’ll update the date at the top, and tell you in Gloss before a change that matters takes effect. If we ever close Gloss, we’ll tell you in the app at least 30 days before.
Responsibility
We make Gloss with care, but we can’t promise it’s always available or that every explanation is right. As far as the law allows, we aren’t responsible for losses that come from relying on an explanation. Nothing in these terms takes away the rights the law gives you as a consumer, or limits our responsibility where the law doesn’t allow it.
The law
These terms are governed by the law of Romania. If you live in the EU, you keep the protection of the law where you live, and you can bring a dispute to the courts there.
