What does “clanker” mean?
Clanker is an insult for a robot, and now for AI and for people who lean on it too much. It is used half as a joke and half as a complaint.
Where it comes from
From Star Wars: in the animated series The Clone Wars (2008) the clone troopers call battle droids “clankers.” In 2025 the word came back as a slur for chatbots, delivery robots and self-driving cars, and Dictionary.com put it on its Word of the Year shortlist.
Clanker in a sentence
- Some clanker wrote this email; look at the em dashes.
- A clanker took my order and got it wrong twice.
Can you say it at work?
It is a joke insult, so it works in casual talk about AI. In a company that sells AI, read the room.
