What does “bet” mean?
Bet means okay, deal, or for sure: a quick yes to a plan or a promise.
Where it comes from
From “you bet,” an American way of saying “certainly” since the 1800s. In African American English, “bet” on its own came to mean “deal,” and social media carried it everywhere in the late 2010s.
Bet in a sentence
- “Pick you up at eight?” “Bet.”
- Bet, I’ll send it tonight.
Can you say it at work?
Fine in a quick chat with teammates you know. In an email to a client, “Sounds good” does the same job.
