Serene vs placid

Serene is calm from the inside. Placid is calm on the surface, and can be a little dull.

The difference

Serene is a compliment. A serene person has settled something and it shows; a serene lake is beautiful and still. The calm has depth to it. Placid is flatter. A placid lake has no waves; a placid person does not get upset, and the word can carry a hint that they do not get much of anything. It is the calm of not being stirred, rather than the calm of peace.
