Ephemeral vs evanescent

Ephemeral things are short-lived. Evanescent things are fading in front of you.

The difference

Ephemeral describes a lifespan: the thing lasts a short time and then it is over. A mayfly, a pop-up shop, a trend. It is the neutral, slightly formal word, and it is the one people usually want. Evanescent is about the vanishing itself. The thing is going as you look at it: mist at sunrise, a smile that is gone before you are sure you saw it. It is rarer and more poetic, and it carries the moment of disappearance.
