Ethereal vs ephemeral

Ethereal is about lightness. Ephemeral is about time. They get swapped because they sound alike.

The difference

Ethereal means delicate and light, as if not quite of this world: a voice, a fabric, morning fog. It says nothing about how long the thing lasts. Ephemeral means short-lived, full stop. A thing can be ephemeral and heavy (a traffic jam), and ethereal and permanent (a cathedral ceiling). The two overlap only in the things that are both delicate and brief, which is why people blur them.
