Another word for very.
Very props up a weak word. Often the fix is a stronger word, not a stronger very.
Stronger than very
- extremelyVery, pushed toward the limit. The roads are extremely icy this morning.
- deeplyVery, for feelings and beliefs. She was deeply moved by the letter.
- remarkablyVery, in a way worth noticing. The old car was remarkably quiet on the highway.
In formal writing
- highlyFormal; for skill, odds, and praise. It is highly unlikely to rain before noon.
- particularlyVery, compared with the rest. The second chapter is particularly well argued.
Change the word instead
- exhaustedVery tired, in one word. After the double shift, she was exhausted.
- freezingVery cold, and you feel it.Take a coat; it’s freezing out there.
- furiousVery angry, and hotter. He was furious about the parking ticket.
- tinyVery small, in a smaller word.Their first apartment had a tiny kitchen.
When to keep “very”
Keep very in speech and when nothing stronger fits; “very kind of you” is just right.
